Shamballed

September 3, 2010

Just back from the mighty Shambala festival where I did an impromptu 20 mins at the Wandering Word tent, was empty to start but packed by the end.

Also entered the slam on sunday to try to win tix, but lost out to the mighty Anna Friedmann‘s highly polished poetics and Jeffry Johns rampant freestyle ramblethon … no shame!

The last few weeks have seen a major performance every weekend, from rocking Monkey Business on a Saturday night (7th Aug) to a mad 19 hour roundtrip to do 20 mins with Hammer & Tongue at the Edinburgh Festival (13th) to hosting WordSoundHavePower at the Others with Dave Pepper and Blabbermouth (21st). August has been a spectacular month … next week am off back to Malaysia to carry on the revolution … watch this space …

From Shambala, the following acts were stupendous –

Dizraeli & the Small Gods – folk-poetry-hop with crazy harmonies and amazing storytelling. Get yourself a good god!

Sound of Rum – Kate Tempest’s band, intense and moving. Check out Cannibal Kids and Prometheus … or anything she does really, its all blinding … and she is so so humble …

Plus I got a haircut … punkrock dreadlock!

O.A.P.s @ Confessions

July 13, 2010

Attended the very amazing Confessions night nr Bond Street Rah Palace last night. The concept is disturbingly entertaining, and my rather jaunty northern ballad fell between a lot of stories about secret scotch egg munching, female ejaculation and hiding poo in gardens. Great stuff.

Luci B copped this slightly ropey video of the performance …

The paraplegic cat reference is to our dear fostered cripplecat who we named Tugjob in honour of his unique method of traversing the floor.

The Furious G appeared at Spice of Life in Soho for Shabby Rogue’s last gig before their hiatus … also there were the hilarious Blabbermouth.

GPW read from upcoming release Tiger Poetry – including Other People’s Poetry, My Ex-Girlfriend Is Smoking, The recurring conundrum of a spiritual minded drug user, plus staples You Are What You Eat and O.A.Ps.

Afterwards, he rocked over to 84 Great Eastern Street to the former FOundry to join the open mic night being held there by the new residents of the squatted social centre.

He gave a reading from Howard Zinn’s People’s History of the United States, and then tore the place up with Civil Disobedience and O.A.Ps.

It felt good to be with a home crowd.
